Branding Lessons from Peyton Manning’s Retirement

What can we learn about branding from Peyton Manning?  I live in Knoxville – home of the University of Tennessee – where Manning is legendary, and half of the kids in high school are named Peyton.  So the name is really big here!

The real Peyton has had plenty of endorsement contracts and television commercials: MasterCard, Nationwide, DIRECTV.  For a sampling of just a few, click here.

But what lessons can we learn from Manning’s retirement news conference held earlier this week?

If, instead of high voice Peyton, you had retiring Peyton coach you on developing your company brand…what would he tell you?  First of all…your brand must be human.  In the new marketing paradigm, authenticity and heart-centered communication are winners.

I fought a good fight.  I have finished my football race.  And after 18 years, it’s time. God bless all of you, and God bless football.

How to Brand Like the MVPs

  1. Be Human
  2. Be Customer-centered
  3. Be Memorable

Personal branding guru William Arruda defines a brand as “a unique promise of value.” Manning delivered value on the gridiron and off for more than two decades. His vehicle (football) may change, but the Manning brand will go on.

How about you?  What are you doing that promises the marketplace you have something of value to offer?  Define what that value is, and infuse your value into everything you touch.
